520 3# ‡aReports results of passive acoustic and visual surveys for baleen whales conducted aboard RRS James Clark Ross in Scotia Sea and around South Georgia in 2003. Whales identified by calls were southern right, blue, fin and humpback; visual detections included southern right, fin, humpback and Antarctic minke whales. Most detections occurred either around South Georgia (southern right and humpback whales) or south of southern boundary of Antarctic circumpolar current (ACC) and along outer edge of ice pack (southern right, blue, humpback and Antarctic minke whales). Fin whales were only species acoustically and visually detected primarily in central Scotia Sea along southern ACC front. Discusses use of sonobuoy surveys to estimate spatial distribution of various baleen whale species.
