| Abstract: | Develops photogrammetric methods for reconstructing changes in glacier volume from historic aerial photography, with particular reference to Antarctic Peninsula. Identifies hindering factors, such as inadequate ground control, use of aerial photography acquired for other purposes, missing calibration metadata or negatives, and lack of features on snowy surfaces. Develops methods to minimise these and assess accuracy achievable from aerial photography available for Antarctic Peninsula. Assesses digital image correlation methods for generating DEMs of glaciated areas and optimization of results, concluding that rugged glaciated terrain, with steep slopes and textureless snowy areas is at effectiveness limits. Reviews methods for detecting DEM error and discusses error management in DEMs of glaciated terrain. |
