The Antarctic circumpolar current in three dimensions / Timour Radko, John Marshall.

Title: The Antarctic circumpolar current in three dimensions / Timour Radko, John Marshall.
Author(s): Radko, Timour.
Marshall, John.
Date: 2006.
In: Journal of Physical Oceanography. (2006.), Vol. 36(4) (2006)
Abstract: Presents simple theory for large-scale three-dimensional structure of Antarctic circumpolar current (ACC) and upper cell of its overturning circulation, based on perturbation expansion about zonal-average residual-mean model. Equilibrium solutions found represent balance between Eulerian meridional overturning, eddy-induced circulation, and downstream advection by mean flow. Depth and stratification of model thermocline increase in Atlantic-Indian Oceans sector where mean wind stress is large. Residual circulation in model is characterized by intensification of overturning circulation in Atlantic-Indian Oceans sector and reduction in strength in Pacific Ocean region. Predicted three-dimensional patterns of stratification and residual circulation in interior of ACC are compared with observations.
