Spatial and temporal variations in the thermodynamics since the last glacial maximum at Jutulstraumen drainage basin, East Antarctica / C. Rolstad.

Title: Spatial and temporal variations in the thermodynamics since the last glacial maximum at Jutulstraumen drainage basin, East Antarctica / C. Rolstad.
Author(s): Rolstad, C.
Date: 2006.
In: Norsk Geografisk Tidsskrift. (2006.), Vol. 60 (2006)
Abstract: Uses flow-line model coupled to 2D temperature model to simulate thermodynamic changes of Jutulstraumen drainage basin due to grounding line retreat and increased surface temperature since last glacial maximum (LGM). Basin consists of plateau drained by outlet glacier, and simulated ice volume reductions are 1% and 2% respectively of current grounded volume. Present-day glacier is almost in balance with current climate, and simulated thermal regime of outlet glacier shows basal layer at pressure melting point and negative temperature gradients with depth due to horizontal advection of cold ice from plateau. Sensitivity studies show that strain heating and horizontal advection are important for basal temperatures in fast flowing outlet glacier and for about half of wide basin at polar plateau. Increased strain heating and horizontal advection since LGM control response time required to readjust to new conditions, and control present-day volume.
