Abstract: Reports 98% decline of caribou (Rangifer tarandus caribou) on south-central Canadian Arctic Islands (Prince of Wales, Somerset, and Russell islands) between 1980-1995 - near-total loss of known genetically distinctive group of Arctic Island caribou. Contrasts with caribou on Boothia Peninsula which increased by 38% from 1985-1995 while experiencing annual hunting pressure.
