| Abstract: | Describes Nenets reindeer herding obshchina, Yambto, in Bol'shezemel'skaya Tundra, which existed for decades without authorities or anyone apart from geologists and oil prospectors knowing about it. Its members lived successfully in tundra without usual problems of indigenous communities forced to collectivise such as alcoholism and smoking related diseases. Since 1990, when Russia's economic crisis began and welfare ceased, they have had to integrate and mix with other groups. Outlines social and health problems this has caused. |
