Record #179382:

The geophysics of Antarctic coastal polynyas / Daniela Flocco.

Title: The geophysics of Antarctic coastal polynyas / Daniela Flocco.
Author(s): Flocco, Daniela.
Date: [2005]
Publisher: Cambridge: Unpublished thesis
Abstract: Examines dynamics of Antarctic coastal polynyas in Terra Nova Bay, Ross Sea, Ronne Ice Shelf, Prydz Bay, Mertz Glacier and Pine Island, and discusses their roles in relation to sea ice and deep water production, using two dimensional steady state model and validating results through remote sensing. Includes overview of heat budget and heat fluxes in Antarctica. Estimates that polynyas contribute 7% to total winter sea ice production in Antarctica, and that salt released as result of ice production may contribute over 1 Sv to dense water production.
Notes:

Unpublished thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy, Scott Polar Research Institute, University of Cambridge.
