Abstract: Presents synthesis of studies on benthic carbon cycling and related biogeochemical aspects performed in Young Sound. Integrated carbon budget for outer Young Sound shows that 70% of organic carbon arriving at sea-floor is oxidised. Notes that 30% retention of organic matter in sediments is substantial, but well within wide range of values estimated for other depositional coastal areas of similar water depths. Comparison of oxidation and burial as function of water depth demonstrates large variations in relative importance of these sinks for organic carbon in surface sediments.
