Abstract: Describes whaling activities along Chilean coasts since late 18th century, with particular reference to Chilean whaling companies operating from Punta Arenas, Corral and Chiloe, and to Sociedad Ballenera de Magallanes established in 1906. Owner's wife Wilhelmina Schröder was first woman to live in Antarctic at onshore whaling station at Deception Island. Discusses history of whaling in Chile in relation to creation of 200 mile doctrine in 1940s, and 1982 International Law of the Sea zone.
