Abstract: | Summarises 28 live sightings of spectacled porpoise from Antarctic and sub-Antarctic waters, which support suggested circumpolar and offshore distribution of species, and extend it further south than previously thought. Sea surface temperature ranged from 0.9-10.3 °C, with 52% of sightings in waters 4.9-6.2 °C. Average size of group was 2 animals, and six cow-calf pairs were observed, all accompanied by mature male and some by additional adult. Pale saddle around dorsal fin was noticed and described for first time. Porpoises generally showed fast swimming behaviour when vessel approached, resembling swimming behaviour of harbour porpoises. |
