| Abstract: | Marfa Boretskaya led Novgrorod rebellion against Muscovy in years before its final subjugation of Novgorod in 1478. She had great political influence as she was married to posadnik (mayor) of Novgorod and by extension had influence over its economic development. Outlines history of founding of Solovetskiy monastery in 1430s and its rapid economic success which also benefited Marfa. Describes expansion into Kem region, Vaga and other areas of Russian North. |
