Record #179135:
Two centuries of bowhead whaling around Spitsbergen: its impact on the Arctic avifauna / Louwrens Hacquebord.
Title: | Two centuries of bowhead whaling around Spitsbergen: its impact on the Arctic avifauna / Louwrens Hacquebord. |
Author(s): | Hacquebord, Louwrens. |

In: | Whaling and history II : new perspectives. (2006.), |
Abstract: | Reconstructs history of whaling along west coast of Spitsbergen and impact on environment. Uses annual catch and shipping records found in archives in Netherlands, Germany, United Kingdom and Denmark to calculate original size of Greenland right whale (Balaena mysticetus) population and reconstruct original migration in Greenland Sea. Notes that ultimate elimination of Greenland right whales made huge quantities of plankton and shellfish available for other marine mammals, polar cod and plankton-feeding birds. Compares inventories of recent bird populations with results of archaeological excavations on Spitsbergen and suggests strong increase in plankton-feeding birds as consequence of whaling activity. |
