| Abstract: | Describes and discusses Scott's last letter to his wife Kathleen, written in 1912 shortly before his death during 1910-13 Terra Nova Antarctic expedition, and presented to Scott Polar Research Institute in 2007. Comments on changing attitudes to masculine virtues, and impact of Scott's death on British public. Noted French explorer Jean-Louis Étienne describes opportunities for inner reflection on long polar journeys; discusses motivation of explorers as combination of ideals and ambitions; describes transformative effect of polar landscapes and isolation; and comments on importance of communications and media.
