Abstract: Examines moraine formation in front of glacier subject to winter advance, focusing on small (<5 m high) push moraine formed by 1998/99 surge of Hagafellsjökull. Describes push moraine architecture consisting of multilayered slab of glaciofluvial sediments with monoclinal structure displaced laterally by advancing ice margin. Moraine core consists of frozen sediment with thin slabs of glacier ice embedded in proximal face. Argues presence of slabs characteristic of both brittle and ductile deformation reflects dependence on whether glacial foreland was frozen or unfrozen at time. Explains implied spatial variations in foreland freezing by varying snow cover, concluding thermal regime and timing of ice advance are important for style of internal deformation within ice-marginal push moraines.
