520 3# ‡aReports compression tests performed on three kinds of high-density snow and at five speeds from 1.5 to 300 mm/s to investigate dependence of compression characteristics on speed. Describes experimental setup including sound recording. Reports distinct stick-slip regime at low speeds, with time period depending on snow type and compression speed and extent. Reports intensity of sound recorded during compression was high during slipping. At higher speeds stick-slip was absent, replaced by steady state sliding motion with small load fluctuations associated with high frequency squeak during compression. Also describes study of effects of plunger speed, snow type and temperature on compression and sound behaviour.
