Abstract: | Compares micro-relief distribution of five major moss species on mounds, slopes and hollows in coastal area of East Antarctica. Pottia heimii and Ceratodon purpureus were prevalent in drier environment of mounds where cyanobacteria appear to play important role in nitrogen fixation. Bryum pseudotriquetrum and Grimmia lawiana dominated in more moist conditions of sandy hollows which favoured their high photosynthetic ability; Bryum argenteum appeared mostly on mounds but also in hollows, and rich nutrient input by sea birds may produce sufficiently favourable environments for varied site selection. |
