Record #178740:

Mass balance of the Antarctic ice sheet / Duncan J. Wingham, Andrew Shepherd, A. Muir, G.J. Marshall.

Title: Mass balance of the Antarctic ice sheet / Duncan J. Wingham, Andrew Shepherd, A. Muir, G.J. Marshall.
Author(s): Wingham, Duncan J.
Shepherd, Andrew.
Muir, A.
Marshall, G. J.
Date: 2006.
Abstract: Reports use of satellite radar altimetry to measure elevation change of 72% of grounded ice sheet during period 1992-2003. Depending on how density of snow influences observed elevation fluctuations, ice sheet mass trend falls in range from -5 to +85 Gt yr⁻¹. Finds that data from climate model reanalyses are unable to characterise contemporary snowfall fluctuation with useful accuracy and that best estimate of overall mass trend-growth of 27+/- 29 Gt yr⁻¹ is based on assessment of expected snowfall variability.
