Abstract: Reports experiment to ascertain effect of different feeding strategies on rumen function of reindeer (Rangifer tarandus tarandus), analysing rumen adaption to various diets after restricted feeding in 44 eight-month-old semi-domesticated female reindeer. Finds that rumen function is significantly affected by relatively short periods of restricted feed intake. Also observes significant difference in rumen function between animals adapted to lichen based diet and those adjusted to grain-based diets.
