Abstract: Tärna is newest settled parish in land, dating from 1824. Before that it was used by migratory hunters and fishermen. It was long the poorest too, though fishery was good and so, often, was hunting. Development of Ume River and other watercourses changed this during 1950s and 60s. Articles describe conflict over Saami rights, mountain farmers, landscape, dams, fisheries, Saami, reindeer, hunters and trappers, colonisers, Norway trade, Church, schools, care of sick, craftwork, hydro power and tourism, and individual settlements.
