Long-term abundance patterns of barren-ground caribou, using trampling scars on roots of Picea mariana in the Northwest Territories, Canada / R. Zalatan, A. Gunn, G.H.R. Henry.
Title: | Long-term abundance patterns of barren-ground caribou, using trampling scars on roots of Picea mariana in the Northwest Territories, Canada / R. Zalatan, A. Gunn, G.H.R. Henry. |

In: | Arctic, Antarctic, and Alpine Research. (2006.), Vol. 38(4) (2006) |
Abstract: | Reconstructs population dynamics of barren-ground caribou (Rangifer tarandus groenlandicus) herds from frequency of trampling scars in forest-tundra of central Northwest Territories. Determines scar frequency distribution by careful cross-dating and assesses influence of root age to account for increasing underestimation of caribou abundance with increasing age of roots. Finds that abundance patterns obtained correlate strongly with data obtained from traditional knowledge of Dogrib elders in region and animal counts based on photography. |
