Nineteenth century sealing sites on Rugged Island, South Shetland Islands / Michael Pearson, Ruben Stehberg.
Title: | Nineteenth century sealing sites on Rugged Island, South Shetland Islands / Michael Pearson, Ruben Stehberg. |
Author(s): | Pearson, Michael. Stehberg, Ruben. |
Date: | 2006. |
In: | Polar Record. (2006.), Vol. 42(223) (2006) |
Abstract: | Outlines survey and excavation of two sites on Rugged Island by archaeologists from Australia and from Chilean National Natural History Museum. One site relates to 1820s sealing, and second may be associated with marooned sealing gang in 1870s. Analyses nature of occupation sites on South Shetlands in relation to social and operational context of merchant navies of Britain and USA in nineteenth century, which is considered more directly relevant context for assessing physical evidence than is application of theories of global capitalist systems. |
