Abstract: Considers future of U.S. Coast Guard icebreaking fleet in context of age and condition of vessels. Notes that recent schedule (especially in McMurdo Sound) has accelerated wear on ships, curtailed maintenance periods and increased repair costs. Stresses importance of viable icebreaking fleet to protection of U.S. interests in polar regions.
