Factors limiting productivity of the Central Arctic caribou herd of Alaska / S.P. Haskell, W.B. Ballard.
Title: | Factors limiting productivity of the Central Arctic caribou herd of Alaska / S.P. Haskell, W.B. Ballard. |
Author(s): | Haskell, S. P. Ballard, W. B. |
Date: | 2004. |
In: | Rangifer. (2004.), Vol. 24(2) (2004) |
Abstract: | Presents analysis of biotic and abiotic limiting factors with aim of identifying which seasons are of relative importance to caribou herds and of suggesting life history strategies. Using regression techniques, finds that, despite previous suggestions, net productivity of Alaska's Central Arctic caribou herd did not respond to early summer forage biomass or summer insect severity from previous year. Abiotic effects on productivity included early autumn snow deposition, winter snow condition and spring snow ablation. |
