| Abstract: | Discusses timing of transition from hunting-based to nomadic reindeer herding and presents evidence that climate was particularly inhospitable (cold winters, resulting in crop failure) in Røros district at end of 16th and beginning of 17th century. Uses evidence of effects of cold springs on wild reindeer in 1860s to estimate effects of similar weather on reindeer during 16th and 17th century. |
