| Abstract: | Focuses on kin-based social networks in Dolgan hunter-herder community in Sakha Republic (Anabar region). Gives account of formal organisational changes since demise of socialist system. Shows how informal relationships help local people to cope with increased insecurity. Documents strategies used to extend kinship drawing attention to their relevance to understanding new system of property relations. Shows that domestic reindeer have multiple roles and meanings and that indigenous traditions have incorporated Soviet social values, some of which have persisted. Considers contemporary mechanisms of social control at community level in particular with regard to crime and punishment. |
