| Abstract: | Examines regional melt onset signal of Lagrangian elements of Arctic sea ice in RADARSAT synthetic aperture radar data during spring 1998. Notes that melt signal is clearly detectable not only in backscatter changes over multiyear ice but also first-year ice and mixtures of these ice types, allowing for more complete mapping of progression of melt over sea ice cover. Finds that onset dates for spring 1998 range between 10 May and 29 June; also that spatial pattern of melt onset is characterised by sharp boundaries delineating distinct regions with relatively uniform onset dates and that pattern is associated with moisture and warm air brought in by low-pressure trough and rain event reported by Surface Heat Budget of Arctic Ocean (SHEBA) camp. |
