| Abstract: | Records size and timing of harvests of bowhead whales (Balaenoptera mysticetus) in community of Katkovik, small community on Barter Island. Finds that, in recent years, typical harvest dates have been significantly earlier, even though quota and number of whales taken have increased; also that most whales have been taken within 30 km of village and that mean distance of harvest locations from Katkovik has not changed from 1970s to present. Notes changing sex-ratio of harvested whales as season progresses. |
