Record #177452:

Polar bear predatory behaviour toward molting barnacle geese and nesting glaucous gulls on Spitsbergen / Lech Stempniewicz.

Title: Polar bear predatory behaviour toward molting barnacle geese and nesting glaucous gulls on Spitsbergen / Lech Stempniewicz.
Author(s): Stempniewicz, Lech.
Date: 2006.
In: Arctic. (2006.), Vol. 59(1) (2006)
Abstract: Records observation of polar bear (Ursus maritimus) stalking and chasing flock of adult flightless barnacle geese (Branta leucopsis) in coastal bay near Hornsund, south-west Spitsbergen, and plundering nest of glaucous gull (Larus hyperboreus). Notes that observation is first documented instance of this behaviour, and provides additional evidence of use of terrestrial prey by polar bears during season of minimal ice extent.
