| Abstract: | Examines evolution of Alpine glaciers over past 10 ka, based on dating of wood and peat remains from glacier margins in Switzerland. Explains entrainment in moraines as glaciers advance and use of radiocarbon dating and dendrochronology. Illustrates wood samples in situ and after recovery. Identifies ten periods when glaciers appear to have been smaller than today, e.g., 2650-2000 years ago glacier tongues were at least 300 metres higher and 7300-6800 years ago glaciers may have been absent or vestigial. Notes correlation with higher solar activity and need to establish whether periods of glacial retreat represent hot summers or dry winters. Instructs readers in recovery of samples for dating. |
