Record #177434:

Significant thinning of the south Greenland ice sheet margin / Carl Egede Bøggild, Steffen Podlech.

Title: Significant thinning of the south Greenland ice sheet margin / Carl Egede Bøggild, Steffen Podlech.
Author(s): Bøggild, Carl Egede.
Podlech, Steffen.
Date: 2006.
In: Weather. (2006.), Vol. 61(4) (2006)
Abstract: Reviews recent net ice loss from margins of Greenland Ice Sheet and recognition of ice sheet vulnerability to climate change and describes campaign at Sermilik Brae investigating observed thinning. Discusses assessment of marginal retreat and ablation using historical information and in situ observations. Identifies 5 km total retreat since 1890 (3.5 km since 1985), and thinning by up to 130 m. Describes operation of two automatic stations (near margin and close to equilibrium line) measuring energy and mass balance components, and 3-d numerical modelling showing 45% of recent thinning may be attributable to enhanced flow and ongoing response to post-Little Ice Age warming.
