Record #177433:

Recent changes in high-latitude glaciers, ice caps and ice sheets / Waleed Abdalati.

Title: Recent changes in high-latitude glaciers, ice caps and ice sheets / Waleed Abdalati.
Author(s): Abdalati, Waleed.
Date: 2006.
In: Weather. (2006.), Vol. 61(4) (2006)
Abstract: Reviews recent changes and their significance in terms of ice sheet vulnerability, climate, sea level change, etc. Considers in turn specific changes and mechanisms in Antarctica, Greenland and smaller ice caps and glaciers of North America, Russian Arctic and Patagonia. Describes measurement methods and discrepancies. Broad picture is one of shrinkage, with changes in many cases surprisingly rapid, such as loss of large pieces of Antarctic ice shelf and marginal retreat and/or thinning in south-western Greenland and of Thwaites and Pine Island glaciers in Antarctica. Exceptions include thickening in parts of Greenland and Antarctic interiors, of Austfonna in Svalbard, and in some other Arctic locations, and slowing of some West Antarctic ice streams.
