Abstract: Describes modelling of permafrost distribution with aim of establishing relationship between permafrost occurrence indicated by measurements of BTS (temperature at base of winter snow cover) and set of variables including altitude, potential direct solar radiation and summer snow cover. Compares published models for mapping permafrost in mountain areas. Statistical analysis shows solar radiation and summer perennial snow patches are parameters most influencing estimated permafrost occurrence. Presents map of predicted permafrost distribution based on modelled BTS and validates by comparing with results of recent field work, e.g., geomorphic indicators, geophysical sounding and ground temperature logging.
