| Abstract: | Describes results from two air and ground temperature data logging systems installed to study thermal regimes and their controls on periglacial geomorphological dynamics. Analyses air and ground temperatures at different depths recorded at 2-hour intervals from December 1999 to March 2001. Data reflect high variability of Mediterranean climate, with many freeze thaw cycles but few reaching depths of 15 cm. Emphasises importance of snow cover and its timing for thermal regime. Describes periglacial activity dominated by surface processes, with particular regard to needle ice and upfreezing of granules. Shallow solifluction also occurs after deeper freezing events. |
