| Abstract: | Describes blockfields in areas of Xistral, M. Fonsagrada, Ancares, Courel y Cebreirio, Queixa and Trevinca. Reports blockfields common, mainly on quartzites and granites. Discusses nomenclature and taxonomy, and blockfield genesis (periglacial in all cases, fitting Ballantyne's definition of mountain-top detritus). Discusses palaeoenvironmental significance of blockfields and rock glaciers in area of Penalonga. Concludes blockfield distribution and relationship with other palaeoenvironmental indicators, such as fossil rock glaciers, indicate existence of permanently frozen ground during Late Pleistocene. Proposes use of block fields as indicators of continuous permafrost. |
