Abstract: Uses aerial photographs to determine extent of icing fields in Svalbard, document and classify their morphometric features and determine factors controlling size and shape. Considers role of topography in proglacial zone where icing fields formed to develop model of relief formation of slightly inclined outwash plains. Presents measurements of icing fields in front of 217 glaciers covering total area of 12.3 km², and field studies of melting and areal decrease. Finds shape and distribution depend on glaciological factors, glacial/geomorphologic setting and duration of frigid temperatures in winter. Icing fields surviving ablation season have characteristic oval or circular shapes and exert important influence on outwash plain formation.
