Sea ice variation in Lützow-Holmbukta, Antarctica, during the last fifty years / Shuki Ushio, Hiroyuki Wakabayashi, Fumihiko Nishio.

Title: Sea ice variation in Lützow-Holmbukta, Antarctica, during the last fifty years / Shuki Ushio, Hiroyuki Wakabayashi, Fumihiko Nishio.
Author(s): Ushio, Shuki.
Wakabayashi, Hiroyuki.
Nishio, Fumihiko.
Date: 2006.
Language: Japanese.
In: Seppyo : Journal of the Japanese Society of Snow and Ice. (2006.), Vol. 68(4) (2006)
Abstract: Uses satellite imagery from Lützow-Holm Bay to examine frequent ice-breakup events since 1980s. Reports unstable conditions lasted several years, with breakups often observed during periods of less snow. Concludes from appearance of long glacier tongue flowing into fast-ice field that landfast ice was extremely stable during 1950s-1970s. Since expansion and contraction of floating ice tongue probably depends on condition of surrounding fast-ice, unstable sea-ice conditions over last two decades have shortened ice tongue. Decreased sea ice snow cover and warm summer-autumn periods led to weakening of landfast ice through melt season, with broken floes transported offshore by prevailing winds.
