Characteristics of air and ground temperatures and the reconstruction of active layer thickness on the Rink Plateau, James Ross Island, Antarctic Peninsula / Junko Mori, Toshio Sone, Jorge A. Strelin, Cesar A. Torielli, Kotaro Fukui.
Title: | Characteristics of air and ground temperatures and the reconstruction of active layer thickness on the Rink Plateau, James Ross Island, Antarctic Peninsula / Junko Mori, Toshio Sone, Jorge A. Strelin, Cesar A. Torielli, Kotaro Fukui. |
Author(s): | Mori, Junko. Sone, Toshio. Strelin, Jorge A. Torielli, Cesar A. Fukui, Kotaro. |
Date: | 2006. |
Language: | Japanese. |
In: | Seppyo : Journal of the Japanese Society of Snow and Ice. (2006.), Vol. 68(4) (2006) |
Abstract: | Reports measurements of air and ground temperatures from 1995-2004, during which annual mean temperature was -6.9°C. Freeze-thaw occurred on almost every day on which positive temperatures were recorded during thawing season. Suggests changes in active layer thickness may influence periglacial features. Uses relationship between active layer thickness and air temperature data from nearby weather stations to reconstruct changes from 1971-2003. Active layer thickness has increased, from around 60 cm in 1970s to around 70 cm from 1996, with a maximum of 80 cm in 1995. |
