Abstract: Presents experiments showing relationship between compressive viscosity η and snow density depends significantly on snow crystal shape and snow temperature during metamorphism from dry new snow to lightly compacted snow. Reports experiments over several days showing lower temperatures and snow layer pressures lead to slower metamorphism. Reports experiments at -5°C, -10°C and -15°C establishing relationships between compressive viscosity η and new snow density for graupel, rimed spatial dendrites, rimed stellar crystals and stellar crystals. Finds compressive viscosity of new snow comprised of rimed stellar crystals or stellar crystals with planar external form was greater than that of rimed spatial dendrites and graupels with spherical external form.
