Natural regeneration of Scots pine and Norway spruce close to the timberline in northern Finland / Vesa Juntunen, Seppo Neuvonen.

Title: Natural regeneration of Scots pine and Norway spruce close to the timberline in northern Finland / Vesa Juntunen, Seppo Neuvonen.
Author(s): Juntunen, Vesa.
Neuvonen, Seppo.
Date: 2006.
In: Silva Fennica. (2006.), Vol. 40(3) (2006)
Abstract: Examines factors affecting regeneration success of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) and Norway spruce (Picea abies) in climatically extreme areas of northern Finland. Monitors pine seed maturity and number of cones at five pairs of study sites during period 1997-2003; also compares seedling establishment and survival of Scots pine and Norway spruce between three different timberline zones. Results indicate that, besides restrictions in reproduction, stand dynamics in timberline habitats are strongly controlled by seedling mortality due to variety of causes.
