An investigation of water and ice chemistry in a fast-retreating glacier in the Dolomites (NE Italy): the Fradusta glacier / C. Dossi, A. Viganó, S. Martin, D. Monticelli, A. Pozzi.

Title: An investigation of water and ice chemistry in a fast-retreating glacier in the Dolomites (NE Italy): the Fradusta glacier / C. Dossi, A. Viganó, S. Martin, D. Monticelli, A. Pozzi.

Date: 2006.
In: Geografia Fisica e Dinamica Quaternaria. (2006.), Vol. 29(1) (2006)
Abstract: Reports analytic chemistry study of Fradusta glacier, Pale di San Martino massif, aimed at rationalising water and ice chemistry with respect to dolomitic bedrock and evaluating natural and anthropogenic impacts. Rapidly retreating glacier has lost 90% of its area over last century. Describes campaign sampling fresh snow, glacier surface ice, proglacial lake water and spring and stream waters. Discusses ion concentration results, which indicate strong chemical weathering interactions between meltwaters and bedrock. Attributes presence of ammonium ion in snow to long-range anthropogenic impact, possibly related to "red snow" events. Uses ion as in situ natural tracer to help understand hydrological karstic circulation of plateau.
