| Abstract: | Notes Wisconsin glaciated several times during Quaternary, with glacial sediment covering approximately three quarters of land surface, having been deposited by ice flowing from three major source regions. Area therefore provides ideal laboratory for evaluating how complex sedimentology, stratigraphy and landform distribution reflect past ice dynamics. Reviews early work in Wisconsin beginning in 1870s. Summarises glacial evidence, ice extent and chronology for pre-Illinoian, Illinoian and Wisconsinan glaciations, reconstructing six different phases of glaciation. Discusses driftless area of south-western Wisconsin and proposes future work. |
