| Abstract: | Identifies three main types of ice in eight karstic caves of Priol'khon'ya, area on western shore of lake Baikal adjacent to island of Ol'khon. Reviews observations, lists cave dimensions and describes ice forms, local climate, cave microclimate, etc. Identifies three types of underground cavities according to origin of coldness and accumulation of snow and ice: cold caves with bag-shaped morphology, caves open at both ends, with airflow direction changing between cold and warm seasons, and vertical karst pit. Discusses recent melting at 1.7 to 2.2 cm/yr and roles of climatic change and anthropogenic pressure in this. |
