Abstract: Investigates capabilities of high-resolution airborne Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) for study of small glacier (Lovénbreen) in north-western Spitsbergen, Svalbard. Examines possible uses of such LiDAR data beyond provision of high-resolution digital elevation models (DEMs). Describes data processing, error estimation and production of DEM with 1-2 m horizontal resolution and 5-15 cm vertical resolution. Discusses potential use of repeat imagery to track linear surface features, such as meltwater channels and crevasses, and to provide glacier surface flow information, and use of intensity of returned LiDAR pulse to discriminate snow-covered glacier surface from bare ice.
