Construction comprised deposition of 0.1-0.35 m-thick layers of snow on basal snow using rotary snowplough, surface smoothing with excavator and compaction four times with bulldozer. Process was repeated three or four times. Investigates ram hardness, snow density and snow structure. Compares meteorological conditions during experiments with those at East Antarctic sites. Concludes snow in form of three 0.2-0.25 m-thick layers compacted four times by bulldozer would be sufficiently hard to serve as runway for wheeled C-130 at proposed Antarctic site near Syowa Station.
