Abstract: Describes first comparison of (ERS2) satellite radar and airborne laser altimetry over sea ice. Explores statistical properties of data to investigate measurement differences and determine appropriate scales in space and time at which to examine them. Results show laser reflects from higher surface than radar and magnitude of difference increases with increasing surface air temperature, suggesting penetration of radar signal into snow varies with temperature. Identifies potential for computing Arctic-wide snow depth maps by combining laser and radar altimetry.
