Abstract: Compares six melt detection method/sensor combinations using data for summer 2000. Sensors include SSM/I, SeaWinds on QuikSCAT, and the ERS AMI in scatterometer mode. Compares existing methods with melt detection based on simple physical model relating moisture content and depth of a surface melt layer of wet snow to a single channel melt detection threshold. Applicable to both active and passive sensors, model improves consistency between brightness temperature and normalized radar backscatter based detection of melt. Reports model-based estimates highly correlated between sensors. Discusses merits and limitations of various methods.
