Includes preparations for 1956-57 IGY; crashes of PV-7 Neptune bomber Boopsie in 1956, City of Christchurch in 1958, C-121 Pegasus in 1971, DC-10 flight 901 crash at Mt. Erebus in 1979; landing of Que Sera Sera at South Pole in 1956; first flight from South Africa to Antarctica; role of helicopters in Operation Deep Freeze; recovery of crashed aircraft, including Phoenix C-130 in 1988 after 17 years under ice; role of women in Antarctic aviation. Appendices list Squadron Commanders, men who lost their lives and locations named after them, and details of planes and helicopters and 150 pages of photographs.
