Abstract: General outline of development of Antarctic whaling industry from explorative phase of late 19th century, through establishment of first commercial operations from 1904, to later massive expansion and collapse, with analysis of shifts in national dominance and technological and economic development, particularly Norwegian-British hegemony of whaling industry. Examines relationship between whaling industry and Antarctic exploration and science with particular reference to context of Nordenskjöld's 1901-04 Antarctic expedition, and importance of this expedition for Larsen's later pioneering whaling operations at South Georgia.
