Abstract: Describes connection between Antarctic Circumpolar Current circulating west to east around the continent, and Meridional Overturning Circulation which transports water south at depth, whilst taking water north from both deep ocean and shallower layers, with particular reference to process by which oceanographers have arrived at this description since end of Discovery Investigations in 1950s, and central role of Southern Ocean in regulating Earth's climate.
