Spitsbergen: van toevallige ontdekking tot Arctisch avontuur / T. Haartsen.
Title: | Spitsbergen: van toevallige ontdekking tot Arctisch avontuur / T. Haartsen. |
Translated title: | Spitsbergen: from accidental discovery to Arctic adventure. |
Author(s): | Haartsen, T. |
Date: | 2005. |
Language: | Dutch. |
In: | Circumpolar Studies. (2005.), Vol. 2 (2005) |
Abstract: | Discusses "outsider's" view of Arctic in context of Spitsbergen's sixteenth century Dutch discoverers and contemporary Dutch tourist industry. In both instances Spitsbergen is represented as cold, white area with impressive landscape of islands, fjords and pointed mountains, populated by polar bears, walruses and birds. Notes difference in valuation of potential exploration: early explorers emphasise Spitsbergen's (animal) resources, but Dutch tourist industry stresses aesthetic and adventurous values. In special issue Het topje van de ijsberg : 35 jaar Arctisch Centrum (1970-2005) |
Notes: | Circumpolar Studies. Vol. 2 :103-110 (2005). |
